The Counselor's Role
Counseling Programs

Attitudes formed during elementary school shape future attitudes toward learning, self and society. Elementary school is a time when students develop decision-making, communication skills and character values. As the school counselor, I work to become a person students regards as positive and trustworthy.
Lunch Bunch
Lunch Bunch
Lunch Bunch is a time when the students have an opportunity to eat lunch with the school counselor in a small group setting. The students are encouraged to share their feelings. They are learning to listen quietly, share the stage, and offer support to our friends. After we finish eating, we often have time for a quick game or cooperative activity. If a teacher cues me that a student is facing a specific issue, we will address it... I might read a book or tell a story and we will discuss it and problem solve.
Lunch bunches meet once a week during lunch for most of the school year. Each individual group will vary based upon that group's unique needs. The purpose of lunch bunch is to increase awareness of and practice different social skills with their peers.
As needed, lunch bunches focusing on other topics may be organized by the counselor if it becomes appropriate and most beneficial for students to address such topics in a group setting. Some examples of possible lunch bunches include, but are not limited to:
* Divorce
* Friendship Skills
* Self esteem
* Anger Management
* Coping Skills
* Grief
Individual Counseling - creates a confidential relationship which addresses the needs of a student on an individual basis.
Classroom Lessons
During classroom lessons, different character traits are presented to the students and a follow-up activity is done to reinforce the trait that was taught.
School-Wide Activities
We are a school family at D.G.H.W.E.S. and we teach our students to work together to achieve any goal. We also do this through character education. I look forward to this year's service learning projects.
Thank you for your continued generosity and support!
